S5.9 Noise and Quiet Hours

Effective Date: May 20, 2015
Last Reviewed: June 12, 2023

Noise Policy:

Excessive noise, in particular music or other sound played at a high volume, can have a negative impact on a healthy and inclusive living and learning environment. As such, students are not permitted to have speakers exceeding the limit of twelve inches by twelve inches, play speakers placed in windows or hallways, and/or have sound-amplifying/production equipment. Students found to be using such equipment will be asked to immediately remove it from campus and may be subject to the Community Standards process.

Quiet Hours:

The cooperation of every student is expected for the maintenance of an atmosphere conducive to study. Relative quiet is expected at all times (courtesy hours); however, the Residence Life Office designates certain hours as quiet hours. These quiet hours are considered important for study and sleep in the residence halls, and it is the responsibility of individual students to observe these rules in a spirit of civility; therefore, they are to be enforced by all members of the community.

Additional quiet hours are enforced during exam periods.

Each year the Director of Residence Life, or designee, will maintain and publish the designated quiet hours on the Residence Life website.
