Effective Date: August 30, 2019
Last Reviewed: August 30, 2019

Bereavement leave is available upon date of hire for all employees regularly scheduled for at least twenty (20) hours per week. An eligible employee is entitled to five (5) bereavement days in the event of the death of an immediate family member. An employee is entitled to one (1) day for the death of an extended family member.

An employee scheduled for vacation or absent from work because of sickness will receive bereavement pay in lieu of either vacation or sick time if the death of a family member occurs.

Definitions:

Immediate Family Member – an employee’s spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, mother or father-in-law, brother or sister-in-law, son or daughter in-law, grandchild, step-parent or step-child or any other individual to whom the employee serves as a legal guardian or primary care giver. An immediate family member may include other individuals of intimate, family-like relationships to the employee.

Extended Family – an employee’s aunt, uncle, cousin, niece or nephew, grandparents in law.

Employees may request additional time beyond that granted if approved by their supervisor. The employee may elect to use any accrued vacation, bonus, or personal time. If no time is available, the additional days will be unpaid.
